Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen
At the King's Garden, in the heart of Copenhagen, sits the majestic Rosenborg Castle, home to perfectly intact cultural treasures over 400 years old.
Rosenborg Castle History
The origins of Copenhagen's royal Rosenborg Castle date back to 1606 when the Danish King Christian IV ordered the construction of a majestic castle for his residence, complete with beautiful gardens and a lush courtyard for entertaining the royal court.
Though it took 30 years to complete the castle, Rosenborg quickly turned into the monarch's favorite residence, so much so that King Christian IV requested to spend his last days on Earth at Rosenborg Castle.
The castle served as the royal residence until 1710 when Frederick IV moved his summer residence to a more modern palace. With this change, Rosenborg Castle became a repository for the royal jewel collection and other valuable objects that have been on display and have remained perfectly intact since the 18th century.
What to See at Rosenborg Castle
Visiting Rosenborg Castle is like traveling back 400 years in Copenhagen's history. The royal bedrooms are carefully decorated with original 18th-century furniture pieces, historic paintings, and ornate embellishments.
Among the royal rooms of Rosenborg, a few stand out among the rest. For example, the throne room, which is guarded by three silver lions, the royal tapestry room, which houses pieces that narrate the Swedish-Danish wars; and a throne with a built-in toilet.
Without a doubt, the most prized possession within the walls of Rosenborg Castle is the Danish Royal House jewel collection. Among these tiny yet invaluable treasures are the original crowns of several Danish monarchs in history, their scepters, earrings, diamond rings, and other precious gems. Queen Margaret II used these pieces for very special occasions.
