Currency in Copenhagen

The local currency is the Danish krone (DKK) in Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. Written as "kr" on the reverse side is a portrait of Danish nobility.

Cash

In Copenhagen, currency in the form of coins comes in 6 different amounts. Starting with the 50 øre coin piece, you'll find coins worth  1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 krones. On the inverse side of the coins are a portrait of Queen Margaret II and the crown of Christian V. As far as paper bills, in Denmark, you'll find bills of 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1,000 Krones, each a different color and decorated with images of various Danish bridges.

Pay with Cash or Card

Payment via credit card is available in practically all of Copenhagen. A majority of shops and small stores accept payment via credit card. Cash is only necessary for certain forms of public transit, like the bus or street food carts.

In most shops in Copenhagen, you can just swipe your card without asking; they'll automatically charge it on the card machine.

Where to Exchange Cash

Copenhagen is full of ATMs on every street corner, so finding an available spot to exchange some money will be easy. In particular, head to the touristic downtown areas, Central Station, or Copenhagen International Airport for guaranteed access to an ATM.
