Copenhagen's Amalienborg Palace
Explore over 150 years of the history of the Royal House of Denmark at Amalienborg, a palace complex consisting of four buildings where the royal family resides during the winter.
Just a few meters from Copenhagen's majestic marble church is Amalienborg Palace, the royal residence of the Danish monarchy.
Amalienborg Palaces
This palace complex, located in the heart of Copenhagen, consists of four palaces surrounding a square. In the center of the square is the equestrian statue of the monarch who commissioned their construction: Frederick V.
Initially intended as a temporary residence, the royal family began occupying Amalienborg after a devastating fire destroyed Christiansborg Palace. Erected in the mid-eighteenth century, the four Rococo-style palaces are as follows:
- Frederick VIII Palace: Serving as the royal residence for Crown Prince Frederick and his family.
- Palace of Christian VII: Although uninhabited, this palace hosts official events and welcomes honored guests of the monarch. It's the most expensive among the four palaces.
- Palace of Christian VIII: Open to the public, it houses the Amalienborg Museum.
- Palace of Christian IX: The residence of Frederik X of Denmark. A raised flag indicates the king's presence at home.
Changing of the Guard
A prominent attraction in Copenhagen is observing the Changing of the Royal Guard, a daily mid-morning spectacle.
Starting their tour from Rosenborg Castle at 11:30 am, the royal soldiers parade through Copenhagen's Latin Quarter, Ostergade, and Kongens Nytorv, concluding at Amalienborg Palace for the changing of the guard.
Please note that this event only features the royal orchestra when the king is in the palace.
Amalienborg Museum
Housed in the Palace of Christian VIII, the Amalienborg Museum showcases Denmark's monarchy history through royal rooms, photographs, and portraits. The museum allows a journey back 150 years, providing a glimpse of historical furniture and utensils of the time.
Visitors can also explore the piano room and catch a glimpse of the main hall, where galas continue to be held today, and the king welcomes international dignitaries.
