Denmark National Gallery
At the heart of Copenhagen, you'll find the Denmark's finest art museum, the National Gallery. It features artworks by Danish and international artists spanning from the 14th century to the present day.
The National Gallery of Denmark, also known as SMK (Statens Museum for Kunst), is located in one of Copenhagen's most beautiful buildings and holds the country's most significant art collection. The museum comprises two structures—one in Renaissance style and the other modern—connected by a gallery adorned with sculptures and a stage. It's a common occurrence for SMK to host concerts, dance exhibitions, or occasional displays in this space.
With a collection comprising over 9,000 paintings and sculptures, the National Gallery of Denmark showcases Danish art from the Renaissance to the Contemporary Age. Many of these works have been acquired or loaned by the Danish monarchy over the centuries, offering a comprehensive exploration of Denmark's artistic heritage.
The Collection
- European Art (1300-1800 centuries): The SMK boasts a significant collection of paintings from esteemed international artists like Rembrandt, Rubens, and Cranach. The east wing of the museum's second floor is dedicated to these mythological and religious paintings. Notable works include Cranach the Elder's "Melancholy," Cornelis van Haarlem's "The Fall of the Titans," and Rembrandt's "The Crusader."
- Danish and Nordic Art (1750-1900): The National Gallery in Copenhagen showcases prominent Nordic painters such as Hammershøi, Eckersberg, and Krøyer. Their paintings depict inland landscapes with women on their backs, harbors and ships, and everyday beach scenes. The SMK collection features works from the "Golden Age" of Danish painting in the 19th century.
- French Art (1900-1930): The National Gallery presents an exhibition dedicated to Parisian art from the early 20th century, featuring paintings by Matisse, Derain, and Picasso. However, most of Picasso's works are housed in the Picasso Museum in Barcelona.
- Danish and International Art (from 1900 onwards): The third floor of the National Gallery of Denmark is dedicated to modernist painting. This exhibition seamlessly integrates Danish and international artists, creating a comprehensive collection that includes works by Jorn, Kirkeby, Roepstorff, and others.
